What motivates you to keep going every day?
Every day is an adventure. I adore the clients I get to work with. A lot of times, we become friends after their wedding day and over the course of their married lives, I get the chance to capture their growing families through my lens. Being in contact with people and getting to share their milestones in life is such a blessing and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. There is no better feeling than getting an email from a bride raving about her images saying “Hiring you was the best decision of my life, besides marrying my husband!” It’s the reason I keep up with what I’m doing!
How do you prepare to capture a wedding or engagement session?
I prepare for a session by charging my batteries all week! A few days before the wedding or session, I check for any sensor dust in my cameras, wipe down my lenses and make sure the time sync stamp is the same on both cameras. The night before the session, I check my bags and make sure camera bodies, lenses, memory cards, batteries, remote triggers and speedlights are all in working order. Then I get a good night sleep! The next morning I make sure to eat a decent protein enriched breakfast and lots and lots of coffee (my favorite part of the morning!). Then, it’s time to check my GPS, check Google Maps and be on my way!
What sets you apart from other photographers?
Each photographer is unique in their own way and what sets us all apart is shooting style, editing style and personality! It’s important for a couple to find a photographer on their wedding day they feel comfortable with. We will be with you covering your wedding all day being your personal paparazzi, and you need to get along swimmingly with your photographer! It’s all about chemistry. I also believe I have a lighthearted, whimsical editing style. I like to keep my images mostly bright, airy and fun. I love color and try to portray that in my images. Sometimes an image needs to be edited a bit darker and dramatic, but it’s rare for me. I always tell couples to try to aim for an engagement session with your photographer as well. For me, this is a chance for my couples and I to get to work together, and see how we mesh. They get to learn more about the way I pose and direct a shot while ‘letting it all unfold.’
What would you like couples to know about you?
I’m pretty much an open book, ask me anything and I’m willing to talk about my life and share what’s important for me. I love horses and used to ride somewhat competitively (but mostly recreational, for the love of it!). I have a toddler son and a supportive husband that make up half of Lemon Twist Images. I always have family on the other side of work, if I’m not working, I’m with my family! I come from a family of small business owners who have paved the way and are always ready for to give advice, support and encouragement. I grew up with an adopted Greyhound and whole-heartily believe in adopting animals. Our next dog will most definitely be a rescue.
Do you have a favorite moment you’ve captured?
First looks are the best! I love the reactions from grooms seeing their brides for the first time. It’s always such a sweet moment. A lot of my favorite moments tend to be quirky happenings at weddings that are usually unplanned. The one that got me laughing the most was when the air conditioning wasn’t working in the venue and everyone was a sweaty mess while dancing. I captured an image of the best man wiping his sweaty face on the bride’s attached veil while she was distracted talking to someone. Talk about a bold move, but it had me cracking up! I also enjoy the occasional random guest break dancing on the dance floor which always makes for a great time.
