With its dramatic cliffs and deep turquoise waters, Jessica and Mark’s engagement session at California’s La Jolla Cove was as breathtaking as it was wild. It was the couple’s first trip to the seaside location, and white gulls screeched overhead and the explored the beach and posed for pictures. Holding hands, Jessica and Mark tread barefoot across the pale sand and onto the large, craggy rocks at the oceans’ edge, the untamed waves of the Pacific crashing gloriously around them — a perfect reflection of the pair’s beautiful, adventurous love. Why did you choose this location?
We chose this location for a few different reasons. One was that it was a convenient area – we wanted to choose something in North County San Diego. However the main reason we chose La Jolla Cove, is that is truly a breathtaking landscape. The beaches are clean, the water is clear and the cliffs are incredible. The only downfall to photographing at this location is that it is crowded. It is probably one of the more crowded beaches in all of San Diego, especially considering that we were planning this shoot in the middle of a heatwave. The couple also liked the idea of going to a location they had never been to before. Sharing a new experience during the engagement session can definitely make the whole thing more fun!
Does the venue/location charge a fee to shoot on location? If yes, how much?
Nope! It’s a public park and it’s free to shoot there.
Tell us about the couple.
Jessica fell in love with San Diego, and moved across the country from Michigan. She met Mark after her move, and the couple will be tying the knot next month where all of Jessica’s family is, in Michigan. These two are totally adventurous, they had another engagement session that was really unique – they did a zero-gravity photo shoot. During their photo shoot with me, they were totally up for anything. Their adventurous spirit definitely impacted the photographs we were able to get. We got a great variety, and the couple had a great time exploring a new area together!
What’s your advice on how to have a picture perfect engagement session?
With a location like this, timing really is everything. We planned to have our session in the early evening; when the light is good, but it’s not quite sunset yet. We were aware of what both the light and tide would be like before the shoot, so we were able to be there at the right time for some really epic moments. Trust your photographer’s recommendations about location and time of day and it will be easy to get really amazing photographs. Also, be ready for anything. These two knew we would be shooting at the beach, so they wore clothes that could get a little bit wet. They wore flip-flops that would be easy to take on and off; and they also brought a change of clothes for the car ride home. All really great ideas if you are planning a photo session at the beach!
