It’s your baby’s big day! Their first birthday and what better way to celebrate than letting your little one enjoy their very own smash cake. As a mother of 2 girls, I did a smash cake for both of their first birthdays. It was so much fun watching them explore and taste their own interactive treat. The smiles and laughter still warm my heart years later.
Cake smashing has become super popular in the last 11 years. It has gone from simple cakes at home to specialized props and studio sessions. If you are thinking about doing a cake smash for your little darling then here are few helpful tips.
Prep the Smash Zone
Drop cloths are life savers! Painter’s drop cloths or a very easy washable surface is the best way to go. It makes clean up so much easier. Looking to keep the interior area totally clean? Take the smash outdoors! It’s nothing a little rain can’t wash away. If you have pups, be wary of outdoor smashing with chocolate frostings or other flavors that could make them sick.
Ditch the Duds
Your baby is about to dive head first into a sticky, sugary, dye-laden confection. Go clothing optional or an outfit you will be okay with never coming clean again.
Have wash clothes on hand near by to help with the first round of clean up. Bathes are the only way they will get really clean, but you at least be able to pick them up.
You do not need a huge smash cake or one overly decorated, it’s going to be destroyed after all! A coordinating mini-cake will be just as sweet, with half the clean up (and price tag!).
Get a Snapshot
Make sure your camera is ready before you put the cake on the highchair tray! Whether you have a studio session or it’s a home affair make sure you do not forget to capture those moments.
Take a Step Back
Enjoy! Let your baby lose and just be in this moment it will be over too soon.
