If a fairy tale inspired wedding was what bride Rachael wanted, it’s most certainly what she got. Married in the most idyllic Pennsylvania setting (the Omni Bedford Spring Resort, a Bedford, PA hotel wedding venue) in a ceremony and reception that would make a Disney princess stop for pause, Rachel and Matt’s wedding day was perfect. With pink roses, pink peonies and pink, well…almost everything…romance most certainly abounded. Read on for a look at more of the details, beautifully captured by Beaver Falls, PA wedding photographer Caryn Azure Photography.
Can you give us an overview of the event? Our wedding and reception took place at the historic Omni Bedford Springs Resort. The ceremony took place in Constitution Hall, with a string quartet greeting guests. Guests enjoyed the ceremony, which included a vocal soloist and a beautiful trelice as a backdrop. Our pastor provided a welcoming and meaningful ceremony, full of emotion and joy. Following the ceremony, the guests proceeded to tour the resort, which could include visiting the tavern, playing horse shoes, or sitting on walking chairs on the porches. Cocktail hour took place in the rotunda on the spa lawn, where guests had a view of the historic pool and grounds of the resort. Following cocktail hour, guests were escorted into the Grand Ballroom, where the reception took place. During the reception, the grand entrance started, the first dance and cutting of the cake took place, dinner was served, dancing commenced, and fun was had by all.
Tell us how you met! We first met at Duquesne University, where we both attended pharmacy school, even though we grew up 10 miles from one another. Matt is three years older than me, so at the time, the age difference made it difficult for us to date, so we started off as friends. As fate would have it, both of us moved back to Altoona, PA. One night, I wanted to get wings and fries, and asked him to come along with me. On our “first date”, I ate a dozen wings and a large order of fries by myself. We never stopped hanging out since.
Was there a specific theme or style? The theme we aimed for was fairy-tale traditional elegance. The ceremony and reception took place at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort, where ten U.S. Presidents have stayed, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. After undergoing a massive restoration in 2007, the resort managed to maintain it’s historic feel with modern touches. This proved to be the perfect venue for our wedding to take place. Along with the venue, the Cinderella horse carriage provided the fairy-tale aspect. The atmosphere of the reception hall, which included candlelight, an abundance of flowers, and white-gloved wait-staff provided the elegance we were aiming for.
How did he propose? As previously stated, both of us are pharmacists. One night after I got home from work, Matt asked me to go out to dinner with him. Given that it was a Saturday night, we could not get in anywhere, and ended up at a local bar. Once we returned home, he had to take our dog Maggie out, and asked me to walk up to my apartment and get the leash with him. Even though I did not want to walk my lazy butt up the stairs, I went with him. Next thing I knew, he tossed a prescription bottle at me, and told me he got me a multivitamin. When I read the bottle, it had my name, and the directions were “Will You Marry Me?” When I looked up, he was on one knee and proposed. To this day, I still carry that bottle around with me everywhere.
What were some of your playful twists that made the event unique? Some playful twists included our Cinderella horse carriage, which helped make our day magical and made me feel like a princess. We also included a candy bar with our favorite candies, such as Sour Patch Kids, Swedish Fish, etc. During the reception, my husband surprised everyone, including myself, by dancing to a Michael Jackson song (this included the moonwalk, which he has perfected at many wedding receptions).
Tell us about your wedding gown and what your wedding party wore: My wedding gown designer was Monique Lhuillier. It was a silk organza dress with a sweetheart neckline and hand-made butterflies covered the whole bottom of the gown, giving it a very fluffy appearance. My bridesmaids wore light pink Jenny Yoo dresses.
Tell us about the food and desserts: We started off with a pear salad topped with a balsamic glaze, which was followed by wedding soup. For our main course, we served a double entree of filet and crab stuffed shrimp. Desserts included our wedding cake (white cake with raspberry filling and butter cream icing), cookie and candy bar, and a chocolate fountain with assorted fruits.
What were the honeymoon plans? We planned a ten day excursion to Maui Four Seasons Resort, where we enjoyed downtime at the pool, went on a sunset cruise, and tracked down good food across the island.
