Few places in the world lend themselves quite so well to romance as beside the ocean, a fact Kathy and Patrick took to heart when they decided to host their family and friends for a wedding weekend at South Florida wedding venue The Caribbean Resort in Islamorada, Florida. Opting for a laid back event that would encourage guests to cut loose and relax, Kathy and Patrick embraced the trappings of the ocean for their wedding day, utilizing elegant nautical decor throughout and bridesmaids dressed in iconic navy blue. Only a short time after a romantic first look session with Patrick before the wedding ceremony, Kathy stood in front of her groom and promised to love him forever. Her lace, open-back gown fit like it was made just for her, softly elegant beside her groom charmingly dressed in khaki linen pants and a white linen shirt. And once the guests had cheered the bride and groom over to the reception, the celebration began, hardly a moment passing without the dance floor packed to the brim. Kathy and Patrick never left each other’s side as their perfect day slipped into night, priceless memories created with each passing moment. This island celebration was captured by Orlando wedding photographer Concept Photography!
Tell us how you met. Was it love at first sight, blind date, friends forever?
We were introduced by friends (two of whom were in the wedding) and had hung out in similar circles before dating. About 4 years ago our mutual friend Mandy who was a bridesmaid and my roommate at the time had emergency surgery to have her appendix removed. My husband figured this would be the perfect time to call – “to check on Mandy.” After confirming Mandy was going to be ok, he asked me out on a date and here we are!
Please give us an overview of the event.
Our wedding was held at The Caribbean Resort in Islamorada, FL. The resort property is made up of several vacation homes that you are required to rent out if you have a wedding there. We had mostly family staying in the homes so it was amazing to have everyone so close for the entire weekend! We started off with a poolside BBQ Friday night before the wedding and all guests were invited. The wedding started at 4:30 on Saturday and lasted well into the night!
Tell us about your wedding gown and what your wedding party wore.
I am still obsessed with my wedding dress. It was a long lace dress with an open back. It was perfect. My bridesmaids wore one-shoulder, long navy blue dresses. My husband and the groomsmen wore khaki linen pants, white linen shirts, and flip-flops.
What was the most memorable moment?
Seeing each other for the first time on the dock when we did our first look photos. It was so nice to be able to kiss and hug him and let a lot of the nerves go by seeing him for those 2 hours before the ceremony started.
Was there a specific theme or style?
Nautical beach theme – it was a relaxed, laid back event in an amazing setting. Guests were told to wear casual sundresses and khakis/Tommy Bahama style shirt and flip flops!
Now for the proposal…details!
Ironically enough, it was Friday the 13th. His boss usually gives him off due to superstitions so he had been hounding me for a week to go to the beach with him. I kept telling him I had to work, and he said fine let’s go when you get off of work. Well I didn’t think he was serious (who wants to go to the beach at 6pm?) – I decided to go get my nails done and run some errands and he kept calling asking where I was because he was waiting for me to go to the beach. When I got home he was all ready in his board shorts and bag packed for the beach. I told him I would go with him but I wasn’t putting on a bathing suit because I didn’t want to get all sweaty. He laughed and said OK fine, let’s just go! We walked down to the beach and about 30 minutes later, I was sweating anyway because I was so excited he had just popped the question! Whoever said Friday the 13th is bad luck?
Did you DIY any of the details?
Yes a lot! This was one of my favorite parts of planning the wedding! Like a lot of people do, we designed our own koozies. I also made signs for the front of the resort and throughout the reception area. In keeping up with our nautical theme, we ordered starfish and made the seating cards for everyone (my husband was a huge help with this!). Also – on each of the tables, my husband made monkey fist nautical rope knots to hold the table #s – I’m guessing people liked these because we only came home with 4 out of 16 of them!
Tell us about the food and desserts.
The cake was the best part! Key Lime & Vanilla Cake with Fudge filling – SO DELICIOUS!
What kind of energy did your entertainment give the event?
Michael with DJ Innovations was great! He kept the crowd going for hours on end! There was never a moment when the dance floor was not completely full.
