Morgan and David were introduced by mutual friends while visiting a bar in Athens, and the two immediately hit it off! It wasn’t long before David asked Morgan out on a date, and two and a half years later, he got down on one knee and asked her the biggest question of all: Will you marry me? Morgan said yes, and the plans for their laid back summertime nuptials commenced! The couple decided to have the wedding at The Solarium, a charming and historic venue in Decatur, GA, that provided lots of freedom in choosing the decor. Bright orange and navy (with some splashes of green) were the colors used throughout the day, most brilliantly displayed in the large paper flowers that hung overhead as Morgan and David exchanged their vows before ninety of their family and friends. Fun and personal details flooded the reception, and following a delicious supper from a Happy Belly food truck (such a cool idea!), guests passed the night away laughing, dancing and striking goofy poses at the photobooth! Tell us about your wedding gown and what your wedding party wore.
My wedding dress was beautiful and incredibly comfortable. It had a gorgeous back cutout detail, with flowers around the edge. It had an a-line shape with soft chiffon that was perfect for the hot June weather. The illusion back gave it a soft and feminine feel. The girls wore cocktail-length navy dresses that were also a-line with soft chiffon around the shoulders and waist. There was a cute wave detail across the chest. They all loved the dress and have worn it on other occasions. The guys had a Mumford and Sons look, with grey herringbone vests, khaki pants, white shirts and navy wool ties. David wore an orange and white gingham shirt to stand out. They all had boutonnieres with hops and a Lagunitas beer cap (they love beer and make their own occasionally).
Was there a specific theme or style? What inspired it?
Our colors were bright orange and navy (no school affiliation, just like them). Most of my ideas came from Pinterest or Etsy. It had a very DIY feel to it, with a lot of fun little details.
Now for the proposal…details!
On our 2 1/2 year anniversary, David told me that he had an early birthday present for me. He took a small gift bag out of his sock drawer and handed it to me. Inside the bag was a ring box and I immediately teared up. David got down on one knee and asked me to marry him and I said yes! After I called everyone, our roommates had a champagne toast waiting for us. Then I made him recreate it so we could have pictures.
What were your playful twists that made the event unique?
We had a lot of unique details that I really enjoyed creating. We had pictures of David and me as children hanging from the chairs down the aisle. Guests found their seats by reading a tag on their takeaway gift – a mason jar with an orange or navy koozie on it the read “To have and to hold, and to keep you beer cold. Morgan and David. June 7, 2013”. Once they got to their seat, there was a Mad Lib there so they could give us marriage advice. The table numbers were Polaroids of us with different themes. We made the photobooth and had a lot of fun props to go along with it. I made signs for the bathroom with pictures of us as kids. I also made cards to hold a sparkler for everyone, with a matchbook attached that had stickers I made of us.
What was the most memorable moment?
I think smashing cake in David’s face was definitely one of my favorite moments.
What was the best wedding advice you received?
Most people told me to eat something while getting ready, and try to enjoy the night without worrying about all the little details. I did both and it worked out really well!
