Think a traditional wedding has to be followed by a traditional reception? Think again! After a surprise lake house proposal, Hannah and David decided on a classic church wedding, exchanging vows before a grand total of 430 guests. For the reception, however, this pair chose a less conventional locale – a wedding venue in Columbus, Georgia called The RiverMill Event Centre, which serves as a renovated cotton mill settled at the edge of the Chattahoochee River. Share in the excitement and elegance of this event with these photos from Athens wedding photographer, ZoomWorks Photography.
Tell us how you met…
David and I met in college at the University of Georgia through mutual friends. We were friends for several months until we went out on our first date. We dated almost 7 years before we got married in 2012.
Now for the proposal… details!
David and I were living in Atlanta and one weekend in May of 2011, he told me we were going to go to have a relaxing weekend at his family’s lake house. We had been there many times before, so I didn’t suspect anything. We picked up dinner at our favorite restaurant near the lake and sat out on the porch enjoying the meal and the view. As we were eating, a bad storm blew in and we had to go inside. The power flickered on and off, but fortunately stayed on. As we were sitting there talking, David completely surprised me and got down on one knee. I was so shocked, I forgot to say yes…he had to ask me again! It was such an unexpected, but memorable night!
We want to know about all the wedding details, was it small and intimate or big and traditional?
The wedding was big and traditional. We wanted all of the people that love and support us and our families to be there to celebrate with us on our special day.
Can you give us an overview of the event?
The ceremony was held at St. Luke Methodist in David’s hometown, Columbus, GA. The reception followed at The Rivermill Event Centre, a renovated cotton mill on the banks of the Chattahoochee River.
Was there a specific theme or style?
Classic and Elegant
What inspired the theme or style?
The venue itself was an inspiration.
What were your playful twists that made the event unique?
During the reception, we had a photo booth with props for guests to take pictures with their family and friends. The guests got to keep a copy of their picture but they also put a copy for us in a scrapbook. The pictures are hilarious and it is so nice to have such a special keepsake.
Tell us about the food and desserts.
We wanted our food to be comforting, yet elegant at the same time. We had multiple stations with Caesar Salad Skewers wrapped in Proscuitto with Parmesan Crisps, Fried Gouda with Spiced Cream,
Panko chicken Satays with Sweet Mustard and Peach Relish, Truffle Mac and Cheese with Herb Crumb Crust, Artichoke and Spinach dip with Pita Toasts, Carved Roasted Chuck Tenderloins of Beef with Yeast Roll. We also had a station with Risotto made to order with toppings such as Asiago cheese, Pesto, Black/Red Peppers, Artichokes, Oven Tomatoes, Roasted Garlic, Petite Shrimp and Crimini Mushrooms. The chef at the Rivermill, Jamie Keating, did an amazing job. We still hear from guests that our food was the best they ever had! Our wedding cake had three tiers that alternated between butter cream cake and lemon cake with butter cream icing. It was delicious!
What kind of energy did your entertainment give the guests?
Our band, City Heat, added so much energy and excitement to the reception. They pulled guests on stage and had us dancing all night long!
If there was one thing you could change, what would it be?
We wouldn’t change a thing! The day was perfect and exactly what we envisioned it would be. It was so special to know that everyone that was at our wedding was there for us . We felt so loved!
What was the best wedding advice you received?
I had a lot of people told me to not worry about the details and know that things will go wrong, but let that go and have other people on hand that can take care of any issues. I also had someone suggest that during our cocktail hour, have a sit down meal with you and your husband in a private room. It was so nice to have that moment alone before we went to the reception.
