If you are a fan of travel or of having breakfast for dinner (big fan right here!), then you will LOVE Jessica and Gavin’s wedding. Having both lived abroad, Jessica & Gavin love to travel and decided to make it the theme of their wedding day. They did many of the details themselves including Gavin making small wooden plane seating assignments for each guest which hung from trees in front of a giant vintage map and hand-making each menu! And what a menu! Their unique menu included lox/creamcheese on a bagel, eggs benedict and my personal favorite French toast! So grab your morning (or evening) cup of joe and travel the globe with photos by Carla Gates Photography.
Now for the proposal…details!
In December 2010, Gavin booked a 10 day cruise on the Crown Princess. Gavin had devised a plan to propose to Jessica in a unique way. On December 25th he lured Jessica to a packed theater to watch what she has thought was a Broadway musical. However unbeknownst to Jessica, Gavin had spent several months prior to this very night preparing for what was about to happen. As the lights began to lower in the theater Gavin’s heart began beating faster. Three large screens dropped from the ceiling, one on the right, one on the left and one in the center of the stage. What happened next would be one of the most defining points in both their relationship. At first glance what seemed to be a movie preview to a new Hollywood love story was actually the love story of Gavin and Jessica which was created by Gavin Once the video had finished with the word “marry me ?” appearing as large as life on the 3 screens and Bryan Adams music playing in the background, Gavin dropped to one knee and devoted his enduring love to Jessica and propose. To Gavin’s delight she said “Yes.”
Was there a specific theme or style?
Gavin is from South Africa and Jessica lived in Japan and we both love to travel. We decided to go with a vintage travel inspired theme.
What inspired the theme or style.
We wanted a wedding which reflected the things we loved and felt like our own. We both have international backgrounds and many of our guests came from abroad.
What were your playful twists that made the event unique?
Instead of the traditional dinner, we decided to play with the idea of “Breakfast for Dinner” as we both love breakfast. We also had personalized themed tables during cocktail hour. Jessica’s table theme was japan as she lived there and taught young children to speak English. Gavin is originally from South Africa, so his table theme was South Africa. We also named the reception tables after places which meant something to us. Instead of escort cards we made small airplanes for each guest which told them what city they would be seated in.
Did you DIY any of the details?
Yes, we had several projects that were included in the wedding. We created all the Balsa wood planes, approximately 80 which hung from a tree. We also created a wreath with our initials on which was placed over the fireplace. We created and printed the menus. We made a 7 foot direction post with all the table names on them. Framed pictures of ourself in each of the table locations which matched the names of the tables.
What was the most memorable moment?
Gavin: Watching Jessica walk down the aisle towards me. Jessica: seeing Gavin get teary eyed as I read my vows
Tell us about the food and desserts.
Our food theme was “Breakfast for Dinner” and for dessert we had an old fashioned candy bar (pop rocks, bottle caps), a wedding cake, and a dessert bar with lots of our favorites.
What kind of energy did your entertainment give the event?
We had a DJ who played a mix of popular hits, musicals (Jessica’s thing) and oldies. We wanted the music to mean something to us and trigger memories we have made together.
If there is one thing you could change, what would it be?
Eat the food, we were too busy socializing we didn’t get a change to eat our dinner.
