Full of rustic charm and personal details, Laura and Chris’s intimate backyard wedding proves that it’s hard to beat the magic of a simple country celebration! After becoming engaged, Laura immediately began collecting a stash of items to use at the outdoor event — furniture picked up off the side of the road and repainted, vintage knick-knacks found in thrift stores, and lots of other pieces Laura, Chris, and their family members crafted themselves. Invitations printed on handkerchiefs were mailed to guests, and when friends and loved ones arrived on the property of the bride’s parents the day of the wedding, the warm spring air and casual seating of benches, church pews, and hay bales made guests immediately feel at home. This laid back atmosphere continued from ceremony to reception, where, after feasting on delicious home cooking, guests enjoyed games of horseshoes and ladder ball, danced to the music of a live blues band, and roasted marshmallows at a bonfire! Savor the sweet southern comfort of this occasion with these photos by Bonita Springs wedding photographer Brooke Price Photography!
Was there a specific theme or style? What inspired it?
Our theme and style was country and “homey.” Rustic, all about us and incorporating things that represent our life.
Tell us how you met. Was it love at first sight, blind date, friends forever?
We met on a dating website. We had planned our first date, but my grandpa was very sick and I had to go to Indiana at the last minute. I called him and told him the situation, but I still wanted to meet him! He picked me up and drove me to the airport…that was our first date.
Tell us about your wedding gown and what your wedding party wore.
My wedding gown is from Egypt and handmade from vintage lace. My girls wore simple apricot color chiffon dresses. Our groomsmen all work pink plaid shirts and different bow ties.
What was the most memorable moment?
Of course seeing Chris at the end of the aisle and the huge grin he had on his face when he saw me for the first time.
Now for the proposal…details!
On Saturdays we like to go to antique shops, and one day I was at the counter looking at the vintage rings. I tried one on and showed Chris how beautiful it was. He said, “Do you want to wear it for the rest of your life?” I said yes, and he said “Do you want to wear it for the rest of your life as a wedding ring?” I looked at him like he was crazy. I said, “Are you proposing?” He said, “Yes, I am,” and of course I said yes!
Did you DIY any of the details?
This whole wedding was DIY! My husband made the tables out of privacy fencing and our “honey stand” was made out of old pallets I found. All the chairs were picked up along the side of the road and repainted. I did not buy anything “new”!!! Everything was picked up at thrift stores and handmade by me. Everything at our wedding had a meaning and a reason to be there. All the photos on the tables are family photos and the books on the table were all about roads and construction of roads (my husband build roads for a living). Also, little things like the fishing lure boutonnieres. We both love to fish. Even the glasses we used at cocktail hour from my sister’s graduation party (we announced our engagement at the party). Even our wedding venue was important to us and didn’t cost a dime! We got married on my parents’ property which is where we will actually build our future home.
Tell us about the food and desserts.
Our food was down home cookin’! We LOVE BBQ and had exactly what we wanted: BBQ pork, BBQ Bbrisket, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, scalloped potatoes, Olive Garden salad (husband’s favorite thing), and Golden Corral rolls (my favorite thing), crab legs, shrimp and oysters, cake with strawberry and chocolate pudding filling, assorted fruit pies, and s’mores.
If there was one thing you could change, what would it be?
Nothing! Everything was great and we loved every minute!
