Old Spanish architecture. Romantic gardens. Wide open fields and orange groves bathed in California sunshine. Smiling yet? I thought so! Phoebe and Thuong’s engagement shoot in San Juan Capistrano was beyond beautiful. It all began at the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano, where the worn buildings, silent bells, and small, fragrant gardens whispered of days long past. Phoebe was stunning in an exotic gown of red and beige as the couple wandered about the mission, beaming with happiness and love. The fun only grew as the couple traveled to the Northwest Open Space for the second half of the shoot, Phoebe now in a cute white dress, a vibrant bouquet in hand and a wreath in her hair. The bright sun and glorious landscape provided a grand, ethereal atmosphere, the pair’s playful side emerging with a piggy back ride, cheeky smiles, and a spontaneous stroll down some lonely railroad tracks. These breathtaking images are brought to you by Brit Jaye Photography!
Why did you choose this location?
This location was really Phoebe’s vision. I live in San Diego, and we were planning to shoot closer to the couple in Orange County. I am still fairly new to the west coast. Although I know San Diego, Orange County is a little bit of uncharted territory – so it was all Phoebe on this one. I had visited the Mission San Juan Capistrano on a day trip with family once before, so when she mentioned shooting there I was really excited. The location is beyond perfect- historic Spanish architecture and romantic gardens…it’s magical to say the least. There was a vibe we were going for with the engagement session – kind of epic ethereal – so this location definitely fit the bill.
Does the venue/location charge a fee to shoot on location? If yes, how much?
Yes and no. Mission San Juan Capistrano does charge a fee, and the photographer should also be ready to send in proof of insurance prior to the shoot. This is definitely a location where you should make an appointment in advance, and the fee to shoot there is $75. The Northwest Open Space, where we found the field and orange tree grove in the second part of our shoot, was very close by and free to the public.
Tell us about the couple.
Phoebe and Thuong are amazing together. They are one of those couples who has been together for so long, the kind of love they have has grown into something beautiful already; even though their story is only just beginning. Phoebe is outgoing and bubbly, while Thuong is cool and collected- and maybe a bit more reserved. They have a balance that works, and is kind of playful. I really wanted to capture the playful spirit of their relationship during their engagement shoot.
What’s your advice on how to have a picture perfect engagement session?
Relax! Have fun with it! When you are having a good time, it shows in your photos. I tell couples I work with to wear something they feel gorgeous in, and think of it as an adventurous out-of-the-ordinary date night. Also- this is a good time to try out the hair & makeup services you are considering for your wedding day! You can always have the stylist change the look up a little bit before you leave, so your fiancé doesn’t get a sneak peek of your big day look. Having professional hair and make-up can make a huge difference in photos. Phoebe had hers done and it looked gorgeous!
