What could be more adorable than having an old-fashioned birthday inspired by the Little House on the Prairie book series? Not much. Camille’s ninth birthday, held at a neighbor’s farm, was filled with quaint western charm starting with a vintage handkerchief that served as the invitation. As guests arrived, they were immediately transported to the old west when they were greeted with their own personal apron, sunbonnet and metal bucket, staples on the prairie. On each seat was a pillow decorated with bees, ladybugs and grasshoppers embroidered with each girl’s name on it. The girls even drank lemonade from tin cups, ate food off tin plates and were served popcorn, a signature prairie treat, from a wagon. Images by ZoomWorks Photography!
One of the most fun and unique details of the party was the covered wagon serving area. Family friend, Laura Pennington, loaned her covered wagon top to use for the dessert table. The wagon was set up on the prairie and lent the perfect touch to the party.
The cake was covered in blue and white gingham sugar sheets with red, green, yellow, pink, and white touches throughout. The flowers surrounding the cake were quilled (an old-fashioned technique used on paper in pioneer times) and represented the wildflowers all over the prairie in spring and summer. A fondant, wooden bucket filled with beautiful sugar flowers was the topper on the cake.
Camille and her mother, Lydia of the children’s party blog The Party Wagon, found tea cups in various vintage shops where they live and made candles out of them. They filled each teacup with wax and a wick and tied a lace ribbon to the handle. Each guest then chose their favorite to take home with them.
