The afternoon sun had just begun to set in the southern skies of Memphis, Tennessee as Callie looked around the backyard now sparkling from dozens of candles, enormous white lanterns and string after string of garden lights, she knew she’d pulled off (with an enormous amount of help from Garden District) what was about to be a spectacular baby shower. Being a contributing editor to a wedding and special events magazine has its perks. Like, when Occasions came up with the idea of combining two popular features, real events and styled shoots and host a party for a close friend. And, as luck would have it, Chelsea, one of Callie’s dearest friends, was expecting her first baby. So, with the help of two more hostesses, Christie and Morgan, and one heck of a creative team, they set off to plan a shower that was intimate, whimsical, sophisticated and unabashedly fun. The result was that and so much more. Images by J. Malahy Photography.
Mexican papel picado flags got our wheels turning as we started dreaming up how the party would look. Working off of their bold colors and delicate laser-cut details we created a decor-scape that focused on classic dinner party staples like menu cards, linens and flower arrangements, and doused them in vibrant colors, patterns and textures.
Whether or not mom decides to have a glass of red wine, your guests will appreciate the gesture. Create a party memento by soaking off the wine bottle label and replacing it with one that’s custom. We used pictures of Chelsea and daddy-to-be Ryan with the simple message “Cheers!” to add even more personality to the dinner table. They were a hit!
At a baby shower, opt for a mocktail instead — or in our case, a watermelon momtini. Dress up glasses with fun straws, colored sugars or custom labels for an extra touch of whimsy.
Citrus Mocktail for Mom: 1 ounce agave nectar, 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, 1 ounce orange juice, 3 ounces organic limeaid, ice, rimming sugar. Rim serving glass with sugar. In a separate glass, stir agave nectar and grapefruit juice. Add orange juice, limeade and ice. Shake and strain into serving glass, and enjoy.
