When family members are spread out all over the country, the opportunity to be together for big events is even more special. Ashley and Joe Pepitone scheduled the first birthday party of their darling daughter, Delaney, for a few days after Thanksgiving, so that family already visiting for the holiday could stay and celebrate. At a private room in one of their favorite restaurants, The Park Café Restaurant in Duluth, Georgia, Ashley created a whimsical butterfly-themed birthday party using paper butterflies, ribbon, bright and sparkly Christmas ornaments, and a handmade fabric garland. Making sure the party was decidedly un-Christmas, Ashley chose a color scheme of purple, pink, green and turquoise. The birthday girl loved when everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to her, and mom and dad loved sharing great conversation with their closest family and friends as they enjoyed this very special day. (Editor’s Note: You won’t believe the edible butterflies on Delaney’s cake. A masterpiece in their own right, it was the piece de resistance for this warm and lovely party.) Ashley handmade all of the details for the party, including the centerpieces draped in butterfly garlands, drink flags, a fabric streamer banner, custom tags for the ornament favors, and a custom Delaney coloring book for the kids’ goodie bags.
Since the party was held between Christmas and Thanksgiving, Ashley brought some sparkle to the party with Christmas ornaments. To keep the look bright and feminine rather than Christmas-y, she stuck with ornaments in the party’s colors—pink, purple, and turquoise. They were used on branches in the centerpieces and as festive party favors.
Butterflies were the perfect theme for a girly first birthday party, and Ashley incorporated them wherever she could. Eileen Carter, of The Flour Shoppe, decorated the cake with exquisite edible paper butterflies, and the garland Ashley made of paper butterflies and ribbon turned the centerpieces into show-stoppers.
Eileen Carter made Ashley and Joe’s wedding cake in 2008, and has been a close friend ever since! The main cake she created gave guests the choice of decadent chocolate cake with Bailey’s filling, almond cake with Bavarian cream filling, or white cake with banana filling. She also made a “smash cake” for Delaney, using four layers in graduating shades of pink.
