How long have you been in the photography business?
I’ve been a wedding photographer for over 7 years, but have studied and appreciated the craft for much longer. We only take a limited number of weddings each year to ensure a connection with clients, and despite that I’m excited to say that I’ll photograph my 100th wedding in the 2016 season! In addition, to ensure we’re taking great care of the couples who inquire, we’ve added a couple more associate photographers to the team this year. So, if I’m already booked for a wedding day, we can still connect the couple with a rock star photographer through our studio — meaning that they’ll experience a smaller studio atmosphere with incredible one-on-one attention but have access to such broader options with regards to availability and price point. It’s really an exciting time here!
How do you prepare to capture a wedding or engagement session?
We prepare first and foremost by getting to know the couple. It’s important that couples feel like their images are a reflection of them. If they don’t feel like they’re smiling in a natural way, or their poses aren’t really “them”, they don’t get as much out of the photos. We love to listen to how a couple met, learn about their favorite hobbies, and design a photo session around their interests. The same thing happens leading up to a wedding day. We know the special, unique elements that make their wedding day so different than anyone else’s — maybe that means that they’re using a specific flower to symbolize something, or the bride is carrying a handkerchief passed down by her grandmother, or maybe she’s really close to her cousin and so we want to grab an extra moment of them snuggling that day… it’s those details that we love to learn beforehand (or even pick up along the way!) to ensure that the final portfolio is a true reflection of their journey.
What sets you apart from other photographers? What would you like couples to know about you?
It’s incredible how all photographers kind of look the same on paper with wedding collections and sometimes even the quality of work – especially for a couple who has never planned a wedding before! So, our goal is always to be a resource to our couples — to go above and beyond the ‘wedding photographer’ title leading up to and on the wedding day. That might mean assisting the couple or their wedding coordinator with the timeline – allowing for great, natural moments, or perhaps we’re helping refer them to one of our other favorite vendors in the area to help them shape up their all-star team! Then, we finish up with incredibly beautiful archival-quality heirloom albums and wall art. We keep our offerings classic, but modern. And, we only offer items whose quality is great enough that I put them into my own home. The studio spans the Midwest with a large focus in the Chicagoland, as well as eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois (Galena and beyond). But, we keep it small enough that it feels like you’re hiring a friend. I’m honored to have such an incredible team of individuals at the ready to capture beautiful moments for our couples!
Do you have a favorite moment you’ve captured?
I have favorite moments from every session or wedding, but the ones that always get me is the unexpected romance; when I turn and see the groom gently whisper something into his bride’s ear and she giggles with a nose-scrunchy laugh or I turn around and I see the parents of the groom sweetly holding hands. It’s unstaged and it’s totally real. Those tend to be the couple’s favorites, too. When I speak with my associates, we also always agree on the images where we know that we came through for the couple in a pinch – maybe time was short and we rocked the portraits anyway or we saved them from an otherwise nerve-wracking moment. We remember the moment on the back end, but in the image you just see the smiles and the sweetness of the day.
