While St. Augustine, Florida holds the title as the oldest, continuously occupied city in the nation, this sleepy little coastal town has also become one of the most sought-after wedding destinations in America. Couples come from all over the world to exchange vows in the heart of downtown St. Augustine, and with great beaches, a historic downtown and tons of amazing vendors, who can blame them!?
As a bride getting married in St. Augustine herself (C’mon 2017!), I am no stranger to what it takes to plan a wedding here in the Nation’s Oldest City. And so, I was tasked with sharing my expertise and giving up the goods – that is, the best venue and vendors St. Augustine has to offer, or in other words the wonderful, hardworking people will help make your St. Augustine wedding magical.
But first, before and venues and vendors can be decided upon you need to pick your date! I’ve listed a few of the pros and cons of getting married during each season in the Oldest City:
Pro: Spring blooms are blooming, and trees are finally filling out again after shedding leaves for the winter, and that stunning sun has finally come out to play. It’s a beautiful time to be married!
Con: Awful allergies! With those magnificent oak trees comes awful pollination, raining down and making those scenic outdoor spring weddings filled with echoing ‘achoos!’
Pro: Beautiful sunsets light up the sky, fading slowing and softly in a stunning array of orange and pink hues, create a gorgeous background for wedding portraits.
Con: The sweltering heat can reach you even in the coolest of reception ballrooms! During a July day, it’s likely that the temperature will rise well into the high 90’s, so just be prepared for heat-related emergencies. Or maybe a hurricane, as summer is that dreaded season. You just never know!
Pro: The heat wave is finally over, and St. Augustine is finally starting to cool down enough for guests to enjoy those lovely outdoor weddings overlooking the scenic bay-front.
Con: After the time change, the sun goes down around 6pm which cuts times for pictures in half compared to summer. One option is to take pictures before the ceremony, to ensure you get those beautiful Fort photos you’ve always wanted.
Pro: Nights of Lights, of course! From late November to early January, downtown St. Augustine is lit up so beautifully people come from all over the nation to check them out. Just check out this stunning photo gallery from a winter wedding in St. Augustine and you’ll see what we’re talking about!
Con: While the winter is pretty mild in St. Augustine, temperatures do start to fall pretty drastically come come February, and your guests may not be prepared for the unexpected chill. Also during winter months in St. Augustine, there is a thick coating of foggish clouds that do not let up until March, so this is a time where the sunshine state is gray.
Next, time to start researching venues and deciding what is important to you to have what kind of wedding you’ve always dreamed of. Should the ceremony and reception take place at the same space? Do you want a grand indoor ballrooms affair to keep the cold air running, or a lush outdoor garden wedding to take in those amazingly historic views? Or maybe you’ve always dreamed of your wedding taking place in a crazy unique atmosphere, somewhere that will really wow guests? Whatever your wedding vision, research is so important to finding the perfect venue for the wedding of your dreams in the Oldest City.

BEST SPOTS FOR PHOTOS
After your photographer is booked, it’s time to take engagement photos! These are so important because they give you the couple a chance to get to know your photographer in their natural element and get used to the idea of a camera in your face (as it will be on your big day)
St. Augustine is one of the most beautiful cities, filled with natural romance and history that offers so many options for gorgeous pictures. These are just a few (and the best!) of your options, so take a look below and let the pictures speak for themselves!
Castillo de San Marcos (The Fort) | 1 S Castillo Dr, St Augustine, FL 32084
St. Augustine is best known for it’s historic fort, and it truly does make a spectacular background for pictures. Consult your photographer first, but our advice is to take your photos with the bayfront in the background, and wait until around sunset for a truly beautiful sky and romantic atmosphere.
Nombre de Dios Mission Grounds | 27 Ocean Ave St. Augustine, FL 32084
The mission grounds are almost like a secret garden, filled with nooks and cranny’s perfect for photo ops. The beautiful little chapel is our favorite spot, filled with sacred beauty that when you seen your picture’s you’ll sing out hallelujah.
Lightner Museum | 75 King Street, St Augustine, FL 32084
The Lightner is most stunning during Nights of Lights, when the garden is filled with little string lights that are just too perfect to pass up for pictures. It’s also best to wait until later in the evening because of the ever consistent tourists and trolleys passing by. Plus, there is a bridge and koi pond around back where wedding ceremonies take place, and is a perfect spot for unique pictures that not every St. Augustine bride has.
Flagler College | 74 King St, St Augustine, FL 32084
Right across the street from the Lightner Museum, the historic hotel turned college is a St. Augustine signature stand out, where the exquisite inside is more grand than the magnificent outside. Just watch out for the students milling around during the day, as Ponce Hall has been transformed as a girls dormitory. Don’t let the mundane-ness of that description fool you though, the indoors has a grand staircase and a gorgeous mural that took Flagler himself’s breath away. Be aware though that the front gate closes in the evening time, but there is a back entrance that stays open later for you to sneak in and out of.
Aviles Street | Aviles St, St Augustine, FL 32084
Aviles Street connects to the picturesque square of central downtown St. Augustine, and features cobblestone charm along with historic buildings that are such beautiful backgrounds. Don’t stop at the front entrance though- at the end of the street are more gorgeous houses and even better is that the end of the street is without all of the tourists!
Magnolia Avenue | Magnolia Ave, St Augustine, FL 32084
This one of a kind street is definitely considered the most beautiful in St. Augustine, where a tree lined canopy creates a gorgeous background, as shown in the picture above. But be aware if planning to take photos here, just remember that traffic can be a pain! Also, just recently the City of St. Augustine redid the pavement on the road, so plan extra time to coordinate cone-free photos.
PLANNERS, COORDINATORS, & RENTALS
The next step on the wedding planning agenda is getting yourself a coordinator. A wedding planner is really like a wish granting genie, someone who can take care of the little details while you plan the big picture. Bride’s often have this image of a planner being an overbearing loudmouth who overrides their wedding vision, but let’s be honest, that’s what family members are for!
Wedding planners are a must have for your wedding as they bring so much piece of mind to you on your big day. And what is super great is that most coordinators have started their own rental business, so all of those pesky details from big tent rentals, to lights and silverware can be rented from one source. So here are a few of our favorite planners (genies) who are experts in their crafts, and whose only desire is to make your day the best it can be!

Ahh, time to smell the roses! Or peonies, hydrangeas, lilies… you get the picture! Besides the bouquet, flowers are often the most overlooked part of wedding planning, but they definitely shouldn’t be! Great overflowing table centerpieces and a petal adorned aisle can change the whole feel of a wedding, and definitely for the better. Soft and romantic or bold and fun, flowers can represent your unique wedding style and add an elegant touch with the right florist.
Speaking of, not all florists are ranked the same when it comes to wedding planning. Very few florists specialize solely in wedding needs, such as designing creative flowers specific for a wedding style or setting them up. It is also important to have a florist who is knowledgeable about what flowers are in season and helping you decide what is doable for your budget, as those magnificent Pinterest bouquets and centerpieces are not always the most doable and often give unrealistic expectations for actual wedding flowers.

Catering is, especially to the guests, the most important aspect of a wedding. There are only two things that make a party- good atmosphere and good libations. After the ceremony, there is normally a lull in the party for the newlyweds to take portraits where guests are prone to get hangry (hungry+angry) while waiting.
Feeding everyone great food will keep them fat, happy and able to enjoy the evening in celebration. Moreover, most caterers offer a package for alcohol so you don’t need to look elsewhere. I think all guests can agree that dry receptions just don’t have the same atmosphere as one wedding’s with alcohol. But hey, whatever the bride wants, she should get!
That said, if your dream wedding includes a full service alcohol bar with top shelf liquor, that’s great! But if you find there’s no room in the budget for so many options, a limited menu is absolutely available. Have beer, wine, and one signature drink and guests will be just as happy as having all of those top shelf options.
We have carefully decided on three very different caterers that are well established in St. Augustine and offer different packages specialized to whatever your catering needs may be, such as full service and staff to just a buffet, these experienced businesses have dedicated chefs who are known for their delicious creations in the Old City.
The Creative Chefs | By Design Catering

The St. Augustine Favorite | Gypsy Cab Co
Gypsy Cab Co is a St. Augustine restaurant that specializes in wedding catering, and has been a St. Augustine local favorite since the early 1980s and serves up urban cuisine (a fancy way of saying a they little bit of everything). While Gypsy is well known to the locals thanks to the restaurant on Anastasia Island, their catering business has been up and coming the past few years. Have a sit down with the owner Pat, and let him treat you to a small taste of what your wedding menu would look like. (Trust us, just wait until you taste the signature Gypsy Chicken!)
Now onto one of our favorite parts of wedding planning: cake tastings! We’re partial to red velvet with cream cheese icing, but we’re not going to be picky here! And while we want our cakes to be delicious, we also want them to be gorgeous! But we also don’t want to have stunning cakes that taste like card board. And so here are some of our go-to bakers that will ensure a nice balance of deliciousness and beauty.
Sweet Weddings in St. Augustine, FL is a wedding cake bakery are known for their stunning designs and will work with you to design a one of a kind cake that reflects not only your wedding style but also your personality as well. There is a reason why their name is sweet- the experienced staff are also known for their great personalities in addition to their delicous creations!
Crème de la Cocoa
Crème de la Cocoa is the up and coming wedding cake go-to in St. Augustine, FL. Known for their delicious desserts, their talent extends far beyond tiny treats. Nils has been designing gorgeous wedding cakes that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also will get your taste buds dancing. After all, what’s the purpose of a cake if it tastes like fondant!? You can trust Crème de la Cocoa to produce a delicious cake.
As mentioned earlier, music is one of the two things that can make or break a party. Music sets the atmosphere, and so finding the right musician for your wedding is of the utmost importance. Sure, you can set up an ipod to play in the background to save some money, but then someone has to make sure the music gets played and stop when you want it to, and having a family member do that takes away from their experience of enjoying your wedding.
Plus, if said family member accidentally mixes up your entrance song with the reception first dance song, that will be a grudge you’ll hold for a long time to come (Trust us!).
But something else to consider is that the wrong DJ or band can totally ruin the mood of your party by playing music that may not sit well with your 80-year-old grandma, or not playing the right music to get everyone on the dance floor. And so, here is our list of fool-proof, experienced professionals who know how to read the atmosphere of the evening and will give you peace of mind and get the party started on your wedding day!
What’s more elegant than walking up the aisle to a string quartet playing Pachelbel’s Canon in B? Nothing! Live string music is so romantic, and automatically boosts your ceremony from sweet to elegant in just a matter of seconds. And while there are many qualified professionals able to play live ceremony music in the area, we choose to highlight Jacksonville Strings, a string quartet near St. Augustine, available for weddings because of their professionalism and versatility. Not only can you have a violin string quartet, but you can mix and match musicians ranging from pianist, flute, and guitar. So feel free to set up a custom experience perfect for your wedding day!
Beachside Entertainment, a wedding DJ in St. Augustine, FL has been in the wedding industry for almost 15 years and is well experienced in the many aspects of wedding planning that it takes to create a great atmosphere via music. Beachside Entertainment specializes in weddings, but they also perform on a weekly basis at bars all over St. Augustine and so have the experience to ensure that your wedding day is as full of dancing as it is good music, all by reading the crowd!
Y? Entertainment, a DJ service based out of First Coast Entertainment in St. Augustine, FL available for weddings, and is a very detail oriented business that caters to whatever your heart’s desire is for entertainment on your dream day. Y? Entertainment prides themselves on being entertainers, not just DJ’s, who understand what it takes to read a crowd and get the party started, so you know you can trust them to play what will get everyone on the dance floor to celebrate your big day.
St. Augustine local band Chillula is a wedding band that specializes in all of your wedding day needs, from ceremony music, cocktail hour, live entertainment, and they even have DJ equipment on hand for later in the evening. This is a one-stop-shop band that has everything you could need for your wedding day all within one vendor, and what’s more convenient than that? They also play all around St. Augustine, so surprise your guests with a local favorite they already love and let the dancing begin!
HAIR & MAKEUP
When a little girl dreams of her wedding day, she imagines looking so beautiful her groom starts weeping upon seeing her in all of her glory (or maybe that’s just us!) But really, when walking down the aisle brides deserve to not just to look beautiful but to really, truly feel it.
We here at The Celebration Society believe beauty really is a feeling, and while your groom would probably be fine with you walking down the aisle in sweatpants and a top knot, it’s so much funner to get your hair and makeup professionally done to help you feel like the princess you truly are. These professionals will do just that, taking care of you and ensuring a beautiful outcome that will be captured in your pictures forever.
The Bardot Beauty Bar
St. Augustine’s newest premier wedding hair and makeup artists at Bardot Beauty Bar are dedicated to ensuring you have the most relaxing experience the morning of marrying your one true love. The girls at Bardot are qualified in their craft, and only wish to make you feel the most beautiful you’ve ever felt by enhancing your already natural beauty. While the girls at Hopcraft are also dedicated to taking care of your hair and makeup, they also offer mani/pedi’s and even massages to help relax you before you become a Mrs!
While there are many attributes that make St. Augustine a go-to for weddings, parking is unfortunately not one of them! Luckily there is a huge parking garage on the north end of Downtown, but considering some venues are over two miles away that is a far trek to expect guests to walk.
However, the Oldest City has a few tricks up its sleeve, as it offers some truly unique St. Augustinian transportation options that will wow your guests and have them thanking you for your thoughtfulness!
Old Town Trolleys
And that’s where St. Augustine’s main mode of tourist transportation Old Town Trolley’s provides wedding transportation for guests to whatever venue your heart is set on for massive amounts of people. Trust us, everyone will be so impressed and thankful when the night is over and you’ve provided rides back to their transportation.
Country Carriages, a St. Augustine FL wedding transportation specialist offers plenty of horse-drawn carriages to choose from, so the fairy tale can continue up to two hours after the reception ends. St. Augustine itself is a magical place to be wed (especially during Nights of Lights), but what is more romantic than a horse and carriage greeting you after the big day is over for a special tour of the historic city for just you and your new hubby? Uhm nothing!
And there you have it brides! Any one of the aforementioned vendors and venues will go above and beyond to ensure that your wedding day is magical here in the Oldest City. Planning a wedding is a super stressful task that can become so overwhelming at times, and we think this is a great starting point to begin counting down the days until you and your fiance say I Do!
