The reception. The party. The thing that people seem to remember most about the big day is the four to five hour after ceremony party. Great decor, delicious food, dancing music… it all marries together to reflect the celebration of your life and marriage. One of our favorite experts on decor is Chris Macksey from Bold American Events. We recently interviewed him about his take on weddings & parties. Here is what he had to say (and we must say, he is so spot on about the weather!).
What are your favorite bridal trends currently?
I love Bridesmen! Being one myself, for a female friend, I love how it is much more inclusive and allows good friends to play a significant role regardless of gender! Groomsmaid’s are pretty cool, too.
Describe your design aesthetic.
While my designs range from casual sophistication to edgy and everything in between, the most important aspect of my aesthetic is that everything from the band stage to food station layout be pristine and tailored. That means concealing visible wires on and around the stage, obscuring views into catering kitchen, and taking a little time to enhance the look of the ladies & men’s rooms. When I am hired as a designer for a wedding or other special event, I take upon myself to work with other vendors and the venue to ensure the room is polished from every perspective.
Where do you find inspiration?
I like to peruse fashion, interior design and architecture sites & publications. Women’s fashion in particular is very inspiring for color combinations and textures. I also look to nature, inspiring scenes are all around us! From a bird on a bare branch to a fiery summer sky!
Expert Wedding Advice
Event Lighting! Everything you invested in from flowers to gowns will be in vain if they are not well lit. Also choose at least one design element that is a WOW. Whether it’s your dessert display or the ceiling over the dance floor, doing so will keep your guests talking for a very long time!
While paper products play an important role in every special event, items like personalized cocktail napkins are a nice touch, but largely go unnoticed. Also, wedding programs are sometimes viewed as unnecessary and brides are opting for fun signage and even sometimes technology to explain the traditions and who’s who in a wedding.
The weather! Especially as unpredictable as it has become lately! Have a good back up plan in place and just be ready to go with the flow!
