It took no time at all to realize that Kate from Domestikated Life completely got us on the need for stylish entertaining in life. This girl can always find a reason to celebrate, and from following her blog we can tell she throws one heck of a party. We invited her to share her love for entertaining today, and to answer a few questions on her entertaining style, where she gets her inspiration, her favorite ways to impress her guests and more.
Tell us a little about your entertaining style.
I like to think my style is festive but classic — I like to elevate everyday items with special details — like taking a simple street food like tacos, and turn it into a unique dinner party with specialty ingredients, cocktail pairings, and brightly colored decorations.
Where/to whom do you look for entertaining inspiration? I love looking at Instagram hashtags for color schemes, party themes, and DIY ideas. Instagram is a great for getting the real look of an event — it’s always a little less polished than the print magazines or big blogs, and I love that authenticity.
Name your top 3 entertaining essentials.
1 – A well-stocked bar. I’m a bar cart fanatic — I stock my cart to the brim with every color striped straw imaginable. Drink stirrers, wine charms, cocktail napkins — you name it, I’ve got it on my bar cart.
2 – White dishes. A classic white dish can transition from a backyard bbq to a formal dinner party. I have tons of serveware, bud vases, plates, and bowls all in white — which makes it so easy to mix and match as styles and events change.
3 – Good lighting. You could have great food, and the drinks flowing, but if there is harsh light in a room it’s hard for people to loosen up. Turn off those overhead lights and use table lamps, candles, twinkly strand lights — whatever you have to do to lower the brightness and give the room a warm glow.
What are your favorite details to include when entertaining? I like to bring in color and variety with paper goods and textiles. Fun cocktail napkins paired with your appetizers; a menu card on the dinner table, or a signature drink recipe framed on the bar are all fun ideas. And textiles can add so much detail to a space when entertaining — my secret weapon is Ikea fabric by the yard — it’s an easy way to whip up a custom table runner to spice up a table setting!
What’s your definition of ‘celebrating in style’? I think celebrating in style means adding your personality to entertaining — put your stamp on it and try something that makes it uniquely yours.
What’s your favorite cocktail/drink to serve? I’m a fan of champagne cocktails — a little bubbly goes a long way to set the mood at a party. The pop of the cork just sends a “party!” vibe through the air. Try making your own simple syrups with seasonal berry or herb flavors to top off a glass of prosecco.
What’s your go-to recipe to impress your guests? I’m all about comfort food — when you come to my house you’re going to leave full and happy! I have a recipe that my college gal-pals dubbed “fat pasta” — it’s a creamy sauce with prosciutto and chicken and peas over al dente farfalle — super indulgent! And one of my favorite appetizers to make that is quick and easy are goat cheese honey thyme crostini. It’s as simple to make as the ingredients sound: toasted baguette rounds spread with goat cheese and topped with fresh thyme leaves and a drizzle of good local honey — it’s always a crowd pleaser!
Tell us your favorite entertaining memory or favorite part of playing hostess. Every year we throw a big New Years Eve party, and it’s my absolute favorite occasion to entertain. The holiday itself is inherently festive: champagne, confetti, sequins, and midnight kisses! Plus there’s something really special about celebrating the beginning of the new year — it’s a fresh start full of promise!
