Hey folks! Guess what? We’ve got a boatload of engagement sessions coming your way soon on OccasionsOnline.com (Yay!). So as a sort of introduction to all the gorgeousness to come, we would like to talk to you about just that — engagement pictures. We’ve all seen them: The couple at the beach, the farm, or in town, looking too adorable for words as they pose for the camera, eyes glowing, smiles beaming. And while you and I love these pictures, it’s possible that you and your fiancé want something a little different. A little more out of the ordinary. A little more you. Not to worry! Photographer Austin Trenholm of Trenholm Photo is here to tell us how to bring uniqueness to your engagement photos, accompanied by some fun images he shot for an unbelievably awesome couple, Mandy and Matt. Enjoy, and Happy Friday!
How many couples come to you desiring out of the ordinary engagement photos?
During a normal season I’d say I have 5-10 couples who request something a bit different. It really depends. Some just want on or two unique photos and some want completely stylized shoots.
What are things you recommend for couples who want to mix things up with their engagement session? How do you help them draw ideas from their style, interests and personalities?
I would recommend using something that is unique to the couple. Pinterest is great for inspiration, but unless the shoot has something that is truly unique to the couple it will have less meaning. I try to help by just talking to them and asking them about their personal interests and hobbies as well as connecting them with stylists if necessary.
How do clothes play a role in adding a unique flair to an engagement shoot? Or location? Or props?
Clothes are a big one. They say the suit makes the man. Well, it certainly helps. I think clothes, location and props all have to come together to make one consistent look. If one is out of place or weak then the whole shoot suffers.
What’s the most creative, “different” kind of engagement shoot you’ve had the pleasure to photograph?
Mandy and Matt’s shoot was probably the most unique. The roller skates were awesome because they actually love roller skating together (so cute) and also because they already owned most of the crazy clothes an props we used. We also spontaneously asked a guy in a parking lot if we could use his car and he let us!
