For our Winter 2016 issue of The Celebration Society (get a copy here!) we worked with hair & makeup artists Jen Lewis and Crystal Atkins of Cucumber & Mint Skin & Beauty Studio. The team transformed the models into a stunning bride and bridesmaids with their talents. Below they share their passion for beauty and why having a beauty team is important for your wedding day.
Located in Augusta, Georgia, Cucumber & Mint offers hair styling, makeup, skin care, and message therapy. With a farmhouse-chic aesthetic and cozy atmosphere, the salon is designed with the bride in mind. Comprised of Jen Lewis, Crystal Atkins, and message therapist Katelin Hendricks, the team is available for on-location and world-wide travel appointments alike.
How They Got Their Start
Makeup artist and hair stylist Jen is self-taught. She studied Youth Ministry in college, but soon needed a creative outlet and set out for a cosmetology school interview in New York. “This is more my passion than anything,” she said. Jen went on to become the founder and primary artist of Pastel Hair & Makeup before teaming up with Crystal and Katelin to start Cucumber & Mint. Her favorite part about makeup & hair: “I love the creative aspect of everything!”
Crystal Atkins found her passion for makeup and skin care while initially studying Special Education as an undergraduate. While going back to school to earn her estheticians license, Crystal realized that the canvas is as important as her art, and her interest in skin care grew from there. Her number one tip for brides is to take care of your skin: “A beautiful wedding face starts with a healthy face!”
Jen and Crystal are especially inspired by styles that are dewy, natural and whimsical. They reflect this in their own work; Jen creates textured, slightly messy hair styles that radiate breezy elegance, and Crystal keeps brides’ faces fresh and light for a beautifully natural look.
Products They Love
Some of their favorite beauty products include Kenra dry-textured hairspray to keep the messy feel, LORAC eyeshadow palettes, Temptu Pro airbrush makeup, and MAC Pearl Highlighter for dewy skin.
Happy Stylists, Happy Brides
One aspect of the beauty business that the team values is building relationships, which is a huge focus for the salon and is important for gaining trust and results in happy brides. “It’s more about the experience than just hair and makeup,” said Jen. A huge canvas that reads “Being yourself is the prettiest thing you can be” hangs in the Cucumber & Mint studio to remind the team and their brides alike that you are beautiful in your own way.
Leave it to the Pros
In weddings, just like with florals or catering, it’s better to leave it to the professionals—and hair and makeup are no different. Find a beauty team with a style that reflects your own and make sure to communicate what you like and dislike. Jen and Crystal recommend building a relationship over email and coming into the salon to set up a trial to really pin point your perfect wedding hair & makeup look. A beauty team can be a huge part of your day and will always work hard to make you happy. Trust your stylists for a cry-proof, kiss-proof and picture perfect look for your big day!
